Oil-free Hummus (Vegan, Gluten-free)

Oil-free Hummus

Most of the time store-bought hummus is vegan. Occasionally there is one out there that contains dairy, but it's definitely not the norm. However, hummus is full of oils, and they definitely don't need to be!
Humans need fats to survive, this is true. Fats can be healthy and help the body process certain vitamins and nutrients better. However, oil is not a source of healthy fat. One tablespoon of oil (depending on the source) is nearly 120 calories of 100% liquid fat. If you eat fats from a whole food source however, like nuts, seeds, and fatty fruits/veggies (the almighty avocado) then you're getting that fat with a whole bunch of vitamins and nutrients that your body really needs!
A container of hummus usually calls for 4 or more tablespoons of oil, plus all of the healthy fats in the spread. That's a lot of oil. All of that being said, hummus can be an even healthier treat without all of the added oil.

Ingredients:

1 can of chickpeas, strained and rinsed
2 tablespoon of lemon juice
2 tablespoons of tahini
1/4 of a red onion
1-2 cloves of garlic
2 tsbp of nutritional yeast
1 tablespoon of sesame seeds
1 tsp ground paprika
Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

1. Place all ingredients into a high speed blender or food processor
2. Add small amounts of water if necessary to blend
3. Top with extra paprika for a photogenic spread

If you're adamant about having oil on your hummus, you can always drizzle a little bit on the top for that classic hummus look, and it will cut down on the overall oil content in the recipe!
I like having this on sandwiches, with fresh veggies, or even on rice (weird, I know) but it goes well with pretty much everything!
